about

With Compliments
Liner Notes
by Justin Sinkovich
November 2011

Chicago’s Atombombpocketknife (ABPK) formed when David Burns and I moved to Chicago and met Allison Hollihan in late 1997. The band promptly released a single on File 13 and we signed to Southern Records where we released a ten-inch EP and two albums. After a number of line up changes ABPK returned to File 13 for our third album ‘Lack and Pattern’ and then broke up after a last show at the band’s home base the Empty Bottle on September 10, 2005. After so much touring and dedication while remaining pretty obscure, the four of us felt pretty burnt out on the band and amicably parted. Remaining close friends and collaborators throughout the years, there was never talk of reformation until the summer of 2011. Two of our closest friends were getting married at the Empty Bottle and adamantly requested that ABPK play a set. The band agreed to reform the final lineup of Justin Sinkovich, Tony Lazzara, Allison Hollihan, and Che Arthur only for the wedding.

So many old master tapes on DAT, CD, MP3, and cassettes were mixed in with the File 13 Records master tapes. I had always meant to compile everything but so many things in life took priority. With a little extra time surrounding the wedding it seemed like the right opportunity to pull it all together.

I went a little overboard and included more material than is appropriate, but the completest in me is happy with how thorough this is. Everyone else from the band’s various lineups were very trusting and interested to check out what was unearthed which I appreciated. It sounds decent overall, albeit a few rough patches. The track list is in a very non-sequential order due to how long it is so I grouped tracks roughly by category... singles, demos as a band, live in studio, cover songs, then finally solo tracks.

As a final note, Atombombpocketknife or actually at one point Atom Bomb Pocket Knife was a band name used even before these tracks when my friends and I were in college in Knoxville, TN. It was a side project while I was in Thumbnail. A different lineup including Thumbnail’s Jason Morris played a lot of different songs, many of which were released later on an obscure CD on a briefly operational label from Berkley California, Sound on Sound. We renamed the band on that CD ‘Poison Arrows’ instead of Atom Bomb Pocket Knife because Atombombpocketknife was busy starting over in Chicago, including David Burns from Thumbnail. Then years later I started a band called The Poison Arrows. That is all really confusing and in retrospect was really a bad way of going about everything, which I take full responsibility for! So we tried to minimize explaining this in biographical information we made public only to avoid how convoluted it all was. I wanted to explain it here in case you were curious. I think All Music Guide figured it out for our bio there too. Anyway, I did not include any of those early TN recordings here.

about

Atombombpocketknife Chicago, Illinois

Formed in 1997, Chicago's Atombombpocketknife broke up in 2005 after multiple US and European tours, two albums and an EP on Southern, and a third album on File 13. After final performances including ATP + SXSW, the band stopped, but remained close friends.

ABPK reunited for a week this summer (2011) to play a wedding at The Empty Bottle. The show inspired the new singles and rarities collection.
